Description:
It was at Cabo del Sol where the Jack Nicklaus designed the course that 10 years
ago elevated Los Cabos from "a sleepy little fishing village" to a world-class
golf destination. Opened for play in May of 1994, The Ocean Course remains today
the crown jewel of Los Cabos golf and stands as the highest rated "Nicklaus
Signature Design" course in the world. This award-winning course stretches
for more than a mile across some of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring terrain
in the Western Hemisphere. Located at the tip of the Baja peninsula along the
20-mile Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, The Ocean Course
is the centerpiece of the 1,800-acre residential resort community of Cabo del
Sol.
Offering dramatic views of the desert, mountain and sea, Nicklaus has capitalized
on what he calls the "best piece of golf property" he's ever seen
to create an extraordinary golf experience that is a "must play" for
any serious golfer. Designed to provide the ultimate in playing strategy and
beauty, The Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol puts an emphasis on shot-making ability
through small arroyos and sculpted fairways. The dramatic layout challenges
golfers with seven exhilarating holes perched against the crashing waves of
the Sea of Cortez. The front nine meanders through the untamed desert down to
the Sea of Cortez, where Nicklaus put spectacular back-to-back par 3s on the
beach. Like the front, the back nine winds its way through natural desert landscape
back to the sea, setting the stage for what Nicklaus has called "three
finest finishing holes in all of golf."
The spectacular finish begins with the 16th hole, a 445-yard par four that
sweeps down to the edge of an ocean cliff. During the winter months, whales
can often be seen from this hole breaching just offshore. One of the signature
holes at The Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, the 17th hole is regarded as one
of the greatest par 3's in the world. Golfers play their tee shot from a cliff
top over the crashing surf to a green perched on a granite rock outcropping
with the ocean looming in front and to the right of the green. This is one of
the few holes in the world where you actually play over the sea from the tee.
The par four finisher bends around a coastal bluff on the right to a green set
out on a promontory with elevated panoramas of the Sea of Cortez.
Often referred to as the "Mexican version of Pebble Beach," this
Jack Nicklaus Signature designed masterpiece has consistently been ranked by
the golf magazines as one of the top courses in the world since its inception
in 1994. In fact, it remains the only course in Mexico ranked in Golf Magazine's
Top 100 Courses in the World (#68 in the 2003 rankings), and is ranked #1 in
Latin America by Travel and Leisure Golf.
